Since Cousteau created the Aqualung in 1942, dive pioneers have continually pushed the boundaries of deep sea diving to explore & understand the ocean & it's inhabitants, discovering lost cities, lost ships & lost treasures along the way.

By the mid 1960s ongoing research & new innovations ensured professional divers continued reaching new depths. One small but significant contribution during this period was the development of the dive watch, an essential tool for any diver risking his life when exploring the unchartered waters of the ocean.

Rolex had for many decades been an integral contributor in this field, first with the Oyster case in the 1920s, then the Submariner in the 1950s & now in the mid 1960s they introduced the Sea-Dweller. Bigger, better, bolder than any dive watch they had produced before. Capable of supporting the most ambitious commercial diver on his underwater journey due to its innovative helium gas escape valve (HEV) first to 501 metres, then 610m, then 1220m, then 3990m and finally by 2012 12000m, accompanying James Cameron during the deep-sea challenge expedition to Mariana's Trench to 10,898m.

An original vintage prototype Single Sea-Dweller from 1967

The Rolex Sea-Dweller has continued to evolve over the last 50 years. However it took 5 or 6 years of development (pre patent approval of the HEV) before it reached the market place & became available for sale to recreational divers & consumers via retail stores. The early years of development saw a number of prototypes used by commercial & military divers for testing. Models both with & without the HEV whilst rare have surfaced & are highly coveted by collectors with values for certain configurations reaching in excess of 500,000$. These are often refered to by collectors as the 'Single Red', the 'MK0', and 'MK1' (due to the dial types) 'patent pending's' (due to the pre HEV patent case back engravings).

The 1967 Heritage Edition by Project X has been designed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the legendary Sea-Dweller.
